Meet | Case | History | Vision | Schools | Donors | Accolades Accolades Several principals of schools where the Parent Corps is being implemented and tested are so enthusiastic about what it is accomplishing that they have agreed to serve on the Parent Corps Principals’ Advisory Council. As members of the council, these principals are available to speak to other principals interested in bringing the Parent Corps to their schools, answer their questions, and promote the expansion of the Parent Corps. Some have written letters of support for the Parent Corps, which appear below. Principals’ Advisory Council
LettersAugust 2005 Dear NFIA, I wanted to once again thank you for visiting our school and helping host our Parent Corps Workshop. It was a great way to begin our year as we continue to look for methods to move our parents towards getting involved with their children’s lives. Last Wednesday, we had over 130 district parents in attendance – which isn’t a bad start for a fledgling program! As I told you earlier, principals are always a little wary of “new programs” that come from the top. We have attempted awareness programs before, but always through the school and local organizations. Simply put, they were not very successful and lacked the personal touch needed to get parents involved. I have spent twenty-three years in education and have always felt that parents were the key to academic and life-long success. As a parent of a sixth grade boy, I am constantly hoping he will make good decisions as he grows to adulthood. The programs, support, and information Parent Corps provides (and will provide) will be invaluable to parents raising kids in today’s society. In one year’s time I have gone from a Parent Corps “skeptic” to a full-fledged member and “believer”. Why do I believe this program will succeed where others have failed? The answer is obvious; great support, proper training, and dedicated professionals working at the local, state, and national level. Our local people, Karla Kuizin and Deb Behrens, are people movers – they know how to recruit, they know how to motivate, and they know that the students of our community are one of our most important resources. As a building principal, most of this progress has taken place with very little effort on my part. Karla and Deb intuitively know the needs of our community – which makes it very easy for the rest of us to follow. Thank you for the resources and encouragement that you provide – their confidence continues to grow! I hope other communities have the initial success that we have enjoyed. I also hope that we can build on what has been established thus far. I can assure you that our administration will do everything possible to ensure the success of this program. Sincerely, Bill Lamkey
Dear NFIA, I am writing this letter to let you and your colleagues know how pleased we are with our Parent Corps at Riverton Middle School. Our Parent Corps leader, Deb Behrens, has already made great strides toward empowering the parents of our students and changing how we look at different issues in our district. Since her initial training last fall, Mrs. Behrens has been networking in the community and with parents to build a trust and awareness of the Parent Corps organization. I have seen increased communication with parents as a result of Parent Corps’ efforts as Mrs. Behrens and other parent leaders address concerns in our community. I hope that our school can harness the positive energy that Parent Corps has created and use it as a springboard for our school to better parent/school interactions. Thank you for all of your efforts. I truly believe that together we can make a difference. Sincerely, Fred Lamkey Meet | Case | History | Vision | Schools | Donors | Accolades
